moneyI get so tired of living check to check.  I don’t think living here in Tulsa is any different than other towns in our country.  With this economy, it’s just harder to stretch a dollar.  So I found 7 tips that help me save money (I had to start somewhere) so I have a little for our savings account at the end of the month.  Here goes:

  1. Do your grocery shopping with a list AND stick to it.  If you forgot to put an item on your list, that you definitely need this week, then write it on your list as you stand in the store to remind you that impulse buys are off limits.
  2. Choose a bank that has totally free checking, and I mean totally.  Often when they provide the checking account itself free, they charge for ATM or debit cards.  If you are direct depositing your paycheck, most banks will waive all fees.  So do your homework, they’re out there and you can save about $100 a year.
  3. Since water heating is the third largest energy expense in our homes, there are several ways to cut it back.  Use less hot water by turning down the thermostat on your water heater.  Insulate your water heater.  Buy a more efficient water heater when your current one breaks down.  Use low-flow aerating showerheads and faucets and keep those showers to 5 minutes.
  4. Take advantage of free reading material, speakers, and all types of activities for children at your local libraries.  Do some checking, I bet they have an online site.
  5. This was a tough one for me!  Say NO to fast food.  Many of us grab breakfast on the way to work and of course eat out for lunch.  So have breakfast at home and bring your lunch and save $5 a day (I’m betting it will be a lot more than that).  But even at $5 a day that’s $100 a month you’re saving.
  6. I love the movies!  I found by attending matinees of those first-run movies I could save money.  Also, there are bargain theatres out there that show movies once their first-runs are complete.  Another saver.  And, again, your local library most likely has a free movie night.  Another way to save is to avoid the snack bar.  Hard to do, I know, but if you can’t stay away then at least share some of the snacks.
  7. This was an idea that my entire family benefited from and we had fun doing it together.  Volunteer to help out at your local fair, festival, or sporting event and receive free admission and more.  Usually your time obligation is minimal and the rest of the time you can enjoy yourselves.
